(CLASS CRITIQUE) -- This is a really great example of formalism. The photographer did a wonderful job of incorporating shadows, leading lines and texture. The shadowing is quite lovely since it causes a very symmetrical effect. The leading lines work as a major attention grabbing focal point, causing the viewer's eyes to follow the lines. This photograph is filled with such powerful texture that one can almost feel what the ground feels like just by looking at it. I like how the photo is very dark and highly contrasted. In fact, I think that the contrast levels are absolutely perfect! There is a definite focal point, the beam of light and the rail portrayed beneath it, which is something that I really like about the photo. The photographer certainly did a fantastic job of turning an ordinary item to something extraordinary!
